Remember the Past, Savor the Present, Explore the Future

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, "thankful" means “conscious of benefit received,” “expressive of thanks” and “well pleased.”  Many people take time during the month of November to remember the benefits they have received, give thanks for them, and feel well satisfied.  For some, this occasion includes spending time with others, such as friends, family members or coworkers.  For others, it includes a time of joviality, sports, and food.

Travel the globe

People around the world have their own traditions and their own times for giving thanks for what they have.  For those in the United States, November is the time chosen to give thanks and remember the good times from the past year.  

​In Canada, they celebrate Jour de l'Action de Grâce in October, remembering their blessings.  ​

In Korea, they celebrate Chuseok around the autumn equinox, remembering their past ancestors and sharing their plentiful harvest

​My husband and I had the privilege of sharing in Chuseok when we lived in South Korea.  Notice the traditional dress. It opened my eyes to see that people in other parts of the world have their own traditions and times of thankfulness.​

In Germany, Erntedank, celebrated in the autumn, gives thanks for their harvest.  ​

In Ghana, Homowo is celebrated in May, remembering a long ago famine caused by drought and giving thanks for provision of rain.

Many, many other countries, regions, and people around the world take time to celebrate.
